ABOUT

The camp was founded in 1999 by Dr. Dianne Jemison Pollard for two reasons: (1) To give university theatre students experience inworking with children and, (2) To give parents options for where to send their children to learn about the world of Theatre. We believe that children who are exposed to a college campus enviornment at an early age are more likely to attend college when they graduate high school. Positive experiences at a young age promote growth and development and foster a desire in the child to continue learning.

The staff of the Children's Theatre Camp is made up of Theatre, Art and Music professors at Texas Southern University and the public school system. In addition, Theatre majors and TSU students who enroll in the Children's Theatre Calss, serve as camp counselors who are supervised by the Instructor.

In 2005, afternoon classes were added so that other learning opportunites could be available to campers. Each child can take two courses from this list: Art, Debate and Public speaking, Dance and Music.

The Musical Theatre Camp was added in 2009 for teenagers who are 15 years through high school. Younger children who have participated in the camp and wish to continue may do si at this level. The camp is open to all children in the Houston community.

The Children's Theatre Camp and Musical Theatre Camp culminate with a camp production. The camp experience is always a memorable and culturally enriching one.
